You stand in the heart of Friedrichshain, and rising before you is a true gem of Berlin architecture:
the Samariterkirche. Its Neo-Gothic façade seems to belong to another era—imposing,
venerable, and steeped in history. Within these walls, history whispers tales of an Empress,
courageous pastors, and young people who sought hope during the GDR era. Every stone
speaks of faith, resistance, and solidarity—waiting to be discovered by you.
The church was built between 1892 and 1894 based on plans by the architect Gotthilf Ludwig
Möckel, as the growing population urgently needed a place to pray, gather, and experience
community. On October 22, 1894, it was solemnly consecrated. Even Empress Auguste Viktoria
attended the ceremony. The church owes its name to the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan—
a symbol of charity and community.
During the Nazi era, the Samariterkirche remained a place of faith, even though the
congregation was under intense surveillance. Many activities had to be conducted with great
caution, yet the church remained a beacon of moral guidance and solidarity. After World War II—
and particularly during the GDR era—it took on a new significance: Pastor Rainer Eppelmann
courageously championed the cause of those oppressed by the regime. The famous “Blues Masses”
drew hundreds of young people and became a powerful symbol of hope and resistance.
Today, the Samariterkirche is a designated historical monument and a vibrant part of the local
community. It serves as a venue for worship services, concerts, and cultural events, as well as a
site of remembrance. Standing here, one can sense the weight of its long history—from solemn
consecrations to dark times, and on to acts of courageous civic engagement. Every corner tells a
