The Gethsemane Church in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg is a church with a rich history.
Built between 1890 and 1893, it stands as an example of the Neo-Gothic style.
The church was named after the biblical site of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed
before his crucifixion.
During the Nazi era, the Gethsemane Church served as a place where people sought
refuge. Some pastors and congregation members sympathized with the Confessing
Church, which resisted Nazi ideology. They preached against the regime and
supported those being persecuted.
In the 1980s, the Gethsemane Church became a key center of opposition to the SED
dictatorship. People gathered in the church to discuss their dissatisfaction with the
government and to plan acts of protest. The church became a symbol of resistance.
On October 2, 1989, a peaceful demonstration took place in front of the Gethsemane
Church. People from all parts of Berlin came together to protest against the
government.
On October 7, 1989—the 40th anniversary of the GDR—the police used force against
demonstrators. Many fled into the Gethsemane Church, but over 1,000 people were
arrested. In the days that followed, people inside the church collected accounts of the
violence. On October 9, Bishop Gottfried Forck stood here and called upon the
government to take steps toward a democratic future.
These demonstrations marked a pivotal moment in the Peaceful Revolution and
signaled the dawn of a new era of resistance.
Today, the Gethsemane Church serves as a place of remembrance for that era. It
continues to function as a church and stands as a memorial to the enduring
importance of freedom and democracy. Visitors
can tour the church and learn about its history.
