Otto Weidt's Workshop for the Blind / Anne Frank Center

It is a cool day in Berlin-Mitte. You stand in the narrow Rosenthaler Straße. Your footsteps echo between the old walls. Before you stands an unassuming gray building. Small windows, a narrow entrance. Nothing suggests that a place of resistance once existed here.
Step closer. Imagine how, nearly 80 years ago, the scent of freshly cut wood and bristles hung in the air. You hear the rhythmic tapping of hammers. Muffled voices—almost a whisper. This is where Otto Weidt worked—nearly blind, yet possessing a clear vision of what was right.
Officially, he manufactured brushes and brooms for the Wehrmacht. But that was merely a cover. Behind these walls, he offered shelter from persecution to Jewish, blind, and deaf individuals. He forged documents, bribed Gestapo officers, and hid people in a tiny, windowless room.
Secretly, he sent food parcels to the Theresienstadt Ghetto. And he dared to retrieve arrested individuals from the camps—armed with nothing but courage and cunning.
Some of those he protected survived. Others were discovered and deported.
Today, you stand at this site—now a museum—that serves as a memorial to Otto Weidt, and as a reminder that even a single individual can bring light into the darkest of times.
Just a few steps away, you will find the Anne Frank Center. It commemorates the story of the renowned Jewish girl who lived in hiding in a rear annex in Amsterdam—and whose diary became a world-famous voice against forgetting. Like Otto Weidt’s workshop, this place, too, is part of a shared mission: to preserve the memory of life, courage, and humanity. Image 1: Own work
