You walk down a 360-meter-long street that, at first glance, appears simply charming and
tranquil—cobblestones, lush trees, and beautiful historic facades. Yet, behind
Husemannstraße lies a surprisingly fascinating history.
Laid out in the late 19th century, it was initially named Hochmeisterstraße. It did not receive
its current name until 1952—in honor of Walter Husemann, a courageous
resistance fighter against the National Socialists who was executed for his convictions.
The magnificent buildings date back to the Gründerzeit era. Many are designated
historical monuments, featuring richly detailed facades of a kind rarely found elsewhere
in Berlin today.
And here’s the twist: In the 1980s—shortly before Berlin’s 750th anniversary celebrations—
the GDR government transformed Husemannstraße into a kind of open-air museum.
Facades were lovingly restored, shops were opened, and suddenly the street felt like
a window into the past—a perfect backdrop for showcasing the Berlin of old.
Between 1987 and 1995, the street even hosted several small museums. Imagine a
hairdressing museum where scissors and hair dryers from the 1920s were brought back
to life—right in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg!
Today, Husemannstraße has lost none of its magic. With its cafés, beautiful facades, and
the gentle rhythm oscillating between everyday life and history, it remains a vibrant piece
of Berlin—a place that demonstrates how the past and present intertwine here almost
seamlessly.
