Site of Bryant's Shop, on the street behind the memorial

Behind the memorial was a shop that was owned by Mrs Anderson in the 1880s. This shop was bought by Frank and Susie Bryant shortly after their marriage in 1908. Frank set up a fruit and vegetable round using a horse and cart, while Susie ran the shop, selling pies, tea and coffee, ice creams, drinks, fruit and stationery. Susie was described as active, industrious, and an extremely good businesswoman, who made her own pies and ice cream. Children used to wait in anticipation for the ice cream to come out, sometimes lending a hand while Frank laboriously turned by hand the ice cream churn.

The photo on your screen is of Bryant’s shop some time around 1900.
