71-73 Sussex St – Railway Hotel

The Railway Hotel’s exact construction date is unclear, but licensed premises have existed here since the town’s early days. In the mid-1860s, Henry Luth purchased the property and had both “Luth’s Store” and “Luth’s Hotel” listed as separate buildings on a 1871 plan. The hotel was described as a “brick hotel.”

The first photo shows the hotel in the early 1900s, before the veranda was added.

The hotel’s name changed to Railway Hotel in 1889 when the railway extension to Linton was being constructed. The current building was reconstructed between 1903 and 1905, with the veranda added later. In 1997, when the hotel was for sale and unsold, it was raffled by the Buninyong Football Club.

The pub is open for dinner Wednesday to Sunday, and lunch on weekends. Enjoy a meal by the fire or, on a nice day, sit in the beer garden with views over the rail trail.
