52 Sussex Street - site of Ball Brothers' Blacksmiths

Ball Brothers Blacksmiths had previously been operating on the east side of Sussex St but moved across the road in 1902 when the Bank of New South Wales bought the land their smithy occupied.

With the advent of the motor car, this subsequently became the Linton Garage and petrol station, operated by J W Harrison until 1932, by A W Tonkin from January 1933, the Dumbrell family in the 1950s, and the Dark family from 1960/61 to 1972, when they sold it to the Cantwells in 1972.

The photos you can see are of Dumbrell’s Garage in the 1950s and Dark’s in the 1960s.
