59 Sussex Street - former Linton Post Office

The first site of a Linton Post Office was at Linton’s Diggings from 1857, then in Sussex St in 1861 on a site next to the present Railway Hotel. A telegraph service operated from 1868, and the first telephone subscriber was connected in 1905. This Post Office was purpose built in 1880, when Miss Georgina Montgomery was the first postmistress. The Historical Society holds a list of many of the postmistresses (and the less numerous postmasters). It closed as a Post office in 2014 and opened as a bed and breakfast in 2017.

The main photo shows a side view of Linton Post Office about 1900. One of the people in the photo is Miss Boness, the postmistress. The second photo, with bystanders, was taken about 1910.
