Cross Clyde St to 62 Sussex St, the site of the Royal Standard Hotel, moved here in 1861 from Standard Lead. It was a large two-storey weatherboard building. The Oddfellows’ Lodge held its first meeting here in 1861, and a Freemasons’ Lodge was also founded.
In 1868, during the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Australia, Linton was the first mining town he visited, and he was evidently entertained here with champagne and a roasted bullock. Before the Skipton rail line opened in 1916, the hotel was a coach stop. The hotel had several licensees, with the last being James Godden before it was delicensed in 1919 and demolished in 1926.
