84 Sussex Street - site of Ching's grocery store and residence

Richard Ching had a grocery shop and residence here from 1861. After he died in 1926, the shop was run by his son William Ernest (Bill) Ching. From the 1940s, Alan Ching assisted his father in the shop. It was sold in 1960 and demolished soon afterwards.

The new Linton Police Station was erected here in 2006.

Next to Ching’s shop was the Surface Hill Hotel, a two-storey timber building with veranda. Meetings of the Irish Constitution Lodge and the Ancient Order of Foresters’ Court Lodge were held there. The hotel closed and was demolished in 1912.

The photo you can see was taken around 1900 and shows the store and residence.
