89 Sussex Street - former Nichol's Bakehouse

Bread and cakes were baked on these premises from the early 1860s. The first baker was Mr J Winstanley. The second, James Nicol, bought this bakery in the 1860s after moving his business from Linton’s Diggings. The last baker was Reg Wilson who was still using the 1860s ovens when he closed in 1972. From the mid-1970s, an antique shop operated here. When it closed in 1983, the premises became a private home.

The photo here is of Nichol’s Edinburgh Bakery in the 1930s. Also pictured going up the hill are Bennett’s house, O’Sullivan’s saddlery & Bennett’s garage.
