Site of the Barry family’s house and the Misses Barry’s Private Music School (next to former Catholic presbytery)

Now a vacant block, around the turn of the twentieth century this was the site of the Barry family’s home called ‘Listowel’, and of a private music school run by the Barry sisters, Gertrude and Dora. The music school building was later moved to 65 Sussex St next to the Linton library after the house on that site was burnt down (see Walk No 1).

The father of the family, Denis Barry, was a policeman who moved with his family to Linton around 1885, where he was subsequently appointed Clerk of Courts and Commissioner for Taking Affidavits.

The Barry family were very involved with Linton clubs and activities, and with the Catholic Church. For many years Gertrude and Dora Barry were pivotal to the musical life of Linton.

All the children of this family, five of whom were girls, became teachers.

The photo you can see on your screen was taken around 1905 and is of The Misses Barry’s Music School.
