Die Ursprünge der Burg liegen im frühen Mittelalter. Sie verfiel im Laufe der Zeit und war nur noch eine Ruine, als im 19. Jh. Prinz Friedrich – ein Mittelalterfan - die Burg wieder aufbauen ließ: entsprechend dem Zeitgeschmack im romantischen Stil.
