Bevor die Porphyrsteine ihren Weg zu den Städten Sachsens antraten, wurden sie grob in Form gehauen. Da der Abbau nahezu ununterbrochen in allen Jahreszeiten erfolgte, boten die Unterstände etwas Schutz für die schwere Arbeit der Steinhauer.
