Stora delar av Rostocks stadsbefästningar finns bevarade än idag. Under andra hälften av 1200-talet byggdes stadsmuren, portar, torn, vakthus (s.k. Wiekhäuser) och vallar. Den längsta delen av stadsmuren, på 450 meter, sträcker sig sydväst om den gotiska Kröpeliner Tor till Schwaansche Straße.
