West Pier

At the foot of the old pilot station, the west pier leads 500 metres out into the Baltic Sea. It provides shelter for the harbour entrance and is a playground for walkers and anglers. If you want to see big ships, no matter what kind, this is the place to be.

On the western pier on the left is a work of art from 1998 by Werner Stötzer. It is a two-and-a-half-metre high abstract sculpture entitled “Große Stehende” (“Great Standing Woman”). It symbolises a sailor’s wife mourning for those left at sea. Behind the “Great Standing Woman”, another female statue is visible on the opposite middle pier, the “Esperanza”. In contrast to the “Great Standing Woman”, she does not mourn, but rather welcomes all seafarers to Warnemünde.

In addition, a memorial plaque at the old pilot station, the “last house before Denmark”, keeps alive the memory of the great storm tide in 1872.
