Even before the first namecheck of Dresden in the year 1206 a small devotional chapel for travelling salesmen was located on todays place of the Cross Church. In 1215 the Nikolai Church, a roman basilica, was build here. It got its name from the holy Nikolaus, who is the patron saint of trades people.
