Built from July to August in 1921, Longyearbyen’s first church was consecrated on August 28th of the same year. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed by fire during the German battleship Tirpitz and Scharnhorst bombardment of Longyearbyen in 1943.
In 1956, the foundation stone for a new church was laid based on architect Hans Magnus’s design. Today, the church accommodates 140 people and is part of the Svalbard parish within the Tromsø domprosti in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland.
