Every March 8th, Longyearbyen celebrates Solfest, the Sun Festival. The highlight is the gathering on the old hospital stairs, accompanied by town-wide festivities. Locals enjoy the annual sale of fresh fruits and vegetables, and children compete to design the festival’s official logo used on t-shirts and pins distributed during the event.
