Established in 1946 to address housing shortages after Longyearbyen’s wartime destruction, Nybyen served as accommodations for Mine 2b workers.
With 36 two-men bedrooms across five barracks, it aimed to reduce commutes and enhance safety during harsh weather. The canteen, Stormessa, now housing Coal Miners Cabins, the vet, and private flats, was built alongside Jomfruburet, exclusively for female employees. Additionally, a Lumpe, where miners changed attire, was set up at Nybyen’s entrance.
The barracks were later used by the University and College, accommodating students before they moved closer to their institutions in town.
