Today’s Lompen Senteret is a bustling shopping center housing various shops, a pharmacy, a bar, café, restaurant, spa, and hairdresser, often referred to by Longyearbyen residents as a shopping mall. Originally built in 1985, it served as a laundrette, changing rooms, and café for coal miners to transition between street clothes and mining suits, known as “Lompe” in Norwegian, preventing dirt transfer to sleeping barracks. In 1996, Lompen Senteret was repurposed into a shopping center, undergoing extensive remodeling from 2018 to 2019.
