Henry W. Grady Statue

A gruesome stopping point on the walking tour, victim’s bodies were brought by the mob to the base of the Henry W. Grady statue. Kuhn theorizes that this was because Grady was a symbol of the wealthy upper class and the mixed and industrialized “New South” that the mob opposed. However, it should be noted that the newspaper editor and owner also blatantly supported white supremacy. Because of this and the monument’s role in the massacre, calls for its removal continue to this day.
