Built after World War Two, the Haugen district in Longyearbyen was created to house engineers and employees, transforming the town into a family-oriented community. It included four-bedroom houses, the office staff canteen “Funktionaersmessen” (Funken), Store Norske Offices, and the first hospital.
Today, old offices and houses serve as residences, Funken has become a hotel, and the legacy of Funktionaersmessen lives on in the Funken restaurant of the same name.
