Unfortunately, even a remote place like Longyearbyen is not immune to vandalism. In 2016, several buildings, including some of Longyearbyen’s cultural heritage sites, were discovered vandalized with graffiti.
A German man in his 30s was taken into police custody, and cans of spray paint were found in his luggage. Most of the graffiti, associated with the German soccer club SG Dynamo Dresden, has been removed. Unfortunately, heritage protection laws prevent the removal of paint from some unprotected wooden buildings without causing damage.
