Das Regierungsgebäude Sysselmannen Bygget thront über Longyearbyen und dominiert die Silhouette der Stadt. Es wurde 1934 erbaut und symbolisiert Norwegens Souveränität über Spitzbergen seit 1925.
Trotz der Zerstörung im Zweiten Weltkrieg entstand 1949 ein neues Gebäude. Die Überreste des alten Gebäudes, einschließlich des markanten weißen Turms, sind heute noch sichtbar.
